Teleferico:
Enjoy a ride in the only cable car in the Caribbean! Puerto Plata cable car is the only cable car in the Caribbean and is located in the mountain “Isabel de Torres”, in the south of the town of Puerto Plata. On the peak of the mountain there is a fortress and on top sits a statue of “Christ the Redeemer” that welcomes all visitors with open arms. Take your picture with the Christ and you will feel his hand on your head! A visit allows for breathtaking views of the ocean and the surrounding area of Puerto Plata, you will also enjoy beautiful tropical gardens since the mountain has been declared Nature Reserve due to the great variety of wildlife and flora. And if you keep your eyes open you will find hidden caves in around the mountain, which lead to natural spring and streams that flow within the mountain! During your stay in Puerto Plata, don’t miss a visit to the Cable Car and Mountain Isabel de Torres, with its exotic natural beauty, superb views and extensive Nature Reserve.
Amfitheater
If you like outdoor concerts you will certainly appreciate Puerto Plata’s new $6 million amphitheater. This 5,300-seat amphitheater can be found adjacent to the historic Fort San Filipe on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. It has been described as “the most current and advanced throughout Central and Latin America”. The dark teak color of the amphitheater blends into the hillside very naturally with the Atlantic ocean providing a stunning panoramic backdrop. There will be enough room for an extra 2,000 people to sit on the surrounding green space. I have to tell you while we were taking these pictures it really was a stunning view!
sigar factory
We visit an authentic cigar factory where cigars are still made by hand. You can try and experience the taste of the handmade cigars and you have the opportunity to buy them at factory prices.
We mostly have Dominican and Cuban cigars and our own private brand: Monseñor Puerto Plata and Cincocho (for export)
Fort San Felipe
Located right on the bay, at the western end of the Malecón, the fort is the only remnant of Puerto Plata’s early colonial days. Built in the mid-16th century to prevent pirates from seizing one of the only protected bays on the entire north coast, San Felipe never saw any action. For much of its life its massive walls and interior moat were used as a prison. Included in the price of admission is an audio tour (English, French, German and Spanish); however, it’s disappointingly thin in terms of historical breadth and depth. There are short explanations of the objects displayed in the small museum – a few rusty handcuffs, a handful of bayonets and a stack of cannonballs. The views of the bay are impressive, though, and a large grassy area in front of the fort makes for a restful stop. Also at the fort is Puerto Plata’s lighthouse , which first lit up on September 9, 1879, and was restored in 2000. The white-and-yellow tower – 24.4m tall, 6.2m in diameter – is a melding of neoclassical style with industrial construction.
Brugal Rum Factory
Named after Catalonian expatriate Andres Brugal, a visit to the Brugal Rum Center offers visitors a chance to see the magic of turning sugarcane into one of the Dominican Republic’s chief exports – rum. From golden brown to crystal clear, the rum you’ll see, smell, and taste at the Brugal rum center will open your eyes to the possibility of what a refined drink rum can be. Families enjoy the wondrous automated distilling and bottling process and marvel at the mechanics of turning sugarcane into the nectar of the gods. An excellent escape from the ordinary while in Puerto Plata, take some time to explore a local icon and learn a bit about distilling in the process. -
Malecon and Tropical Bar
Tropical Bar is the bar on the Malecon in Puerto Plata for the Belgians, Dominicans and other nationalities. Here you will find more than 20 different Belgian beers, including all the Trappists. You can also enjoy the beach with a daiquiri or a drink. There are also snacks (croquettes, croque monsieur, fries ...) and meat dishes (vol a vent, belgian stew) available.
The most scenic route to Fort San Filipe is along the Malecon or the “Oceanside Boulevard”. It’s a 3 kilometer windy stretch of road that has a wide boardwalk perfect for walking or riding your bike. There are plenty of outdoor restaurants and cafes with large pockets of white sandy beaches. We love to drive along the Malecon to see all the beautiful colors of the Atlantic ocean and stop to grab a cold drink and lunch at the Tropical Bar (Belgian Beers). -
